I returned to this nice area on Perry Mesa taking a different angle than the previous trip. I parked where Bloody Basin Rd. crosses Bishop Creek and headed downstream...canyon walls start to rise above...this is Baby Canyon.

It's pretty good walking down the (mainly dry) wash which is alternately very sandy and very rocky, but no drops and no severe overgrowth. About 4mi in I recognized the small butte attached to the south rim, home of the westernmost of the two major Baby Canyon overlook ruins. I spent some time looking around the flat area next to the creek (and a couple hundred feet below the ruin). Lots of pottery pieces, a few bedrock metates, and some petroglyphs can be found here - my guess is the "flats" here were used for agriculture.

I walked up the slope to the ruin, pottery sherds are abundant all the way. I didn't linger at the main ruin this time - I was more interested in finding new things. I stayed close to the rim as I headed east toward the other main ruin and I came across a couple other small ruins along the way. These are revealed mainly by concentrations of broken pottery with some faint collapsed ruin walls and the occasional petroglyph.

At the 2nd main ruin I was again impressed by its layout and I even found what appeared to be a turquoise bead. I continued east on the rim above the drainage I'd been in a few hours before. It was colder and windier on top with fairly constant light snow - sort of a treat for an AZ hiker since it didn't cause any problems.

When I got to the drainage coming down from the New Windmill it looked best to contour back down to Bishop Creek. The snow picked up but it was warmer back in the creek bottom which I took back to the car. We're lucky to have Agua Fria National Monument.
