| no partners | | i like to camp up at carr canyon near my birthday, and this year is no exception. usually the monsoon season will have started, yet not enough into it to lift fire restrictions so many of the people usually drawn to the campgrounds at reef townsite and ramsey vista may not come. more for me.
we made our way down from phoenix on friday afternoon, picked up some subway sandwiches, and made our way up to my favorite campsite (reef #13). it's right next to the group site, so if the group site is unoccupied, we can sit out the storms under the large ramada there. there was a little storm as soon as we got in, but it stopped before sunset so we were able to get our tent up without rain falling on us.
saturday morning, bobby and i hiked up the old sawmill trail, then he went down the carr peak trail to ramsey vista campground and then back the road to camp. i continued to hike up. i haven't been hiking in a really long time, so i wanted to see what i could see. and see if my legs could make it. it turns out my legs still work. i didn't make it all the way to the peak, as i had friends coming up from sierra vista around noon and i didn't get an early enough start. i turned around and it seemed like i was so close. according to my fitbit, i had made it 1.6 miles from the sawmill trail junction, but you can't trust those things.
it turns out great minds think alike, and later that afternoon, randy pulled into the campground. in the evening, we had a great time catching up and drinking beers. then the rains came down and we had to scatter to our respective tents. we crossed paths in the morning before randy took off to hike the mountain, and bobby and i headed down to start the trek back to phoenix. |
