The combination of elevation and sun exposure mean Hermit has less snow and ice than BA, SK, Grandview. The lack of mules and relatively few people mean the snow stays clean and pretty. And from what I saw this day, Hermit even seems to have much less mud ... and the mud that does exist is not 5o% mule excrement.
Usual hike to Santa Maria, chill on the flat spot just below, then quick jaunt on Waldron on the way up.
Back at the Waldron junction, I talked to a fellow who had been working on the Monument/Granite restoration project, removing tamarisks and planting willows. Told him how excited I was to get down there in April, and he said the place is completely changed and I won't recognize it ... course, I haven't been there before anyhow. Thanked him for his work.
Felt strong on this hike! Think my new ipod helped on the uphill - first time I've listened to music while hiking in the Canyon ... won't do it all the time, but it's nice to have along.
Hiked the whole way in shorts - no long underwear underneath - ... very nice. |
