Been thinking about trying Battleship solo for a while now ...
Set off down the BA a little after 9:30. The very top was free from snow and ice, but after taking a pretty good slide below the first tunnel - an onlooker said I put on "quite a show" - I stopped and strapped on the spikes. Wore them through intermittent ice and mud until mile-and-a-half. Got many envious stares at my spiked feet as I strode confidently past groups of people clinging to the rocks as they tried to keep their slides under control ... one group trying to descend the hard sheet ice below Kolb Seep made me very nervous to even pass them - I was afraid one of them would fall into me.
33 minutes to 1.5 mile. Chatted with a nice couple at mile-and-a-half for a few minutes ... the guy asked if I had fallen, because of the splashes of red mud all over the backs of my legs. I laughed and scrubbed it off with some snow.
8 minutes to 2 mile. Departed the BA just below two mile corner, and cached some water and my spikes under a rock beside a tree - hoping I would be able to find them later.
I didn't really look for cairns or try too hard to stay on one path - just followed my instincts and the natural contours of the geography as I headed for the saddle ... worked out just fine, and I ended up following the lower route most of the time quite easily.
47 minutes to the saddle. Had a break at the saddle, then proceeded on ... stayed too low for too long and completely lost all signs of a path. Noticed that I was well below, and just past the large striped boulder that marks the beginning of the scramble to the summit ... bushwacked up to it.
Started the climbing with just a bit of trepidation ... going solo definitely ups the pucker factor.
36 minutes from saddle to summit. Explored the summit, worked on my tan, signed the logbook (only eight entries since Kristi and I last visited in November!), sent a few texts, took some photos, discovered and checked out a small rock structure just below the summit - would be cool to sleep in, or whatever.
Going down the climby parts proved to be much easier than I had feared - easier than going up.
32 minutes from summit to saddle. Had a nice long lunchbreak and exchanged some texts with Hippy about her arrival tomorrow. Noticed that my Evil Monkey got his eyes all scratched up on the sandstone - oops - he now looks like he has cataracts. Wrote something in the dirt on the saddle that I hoped would be visible with binoculars from Kolb Studio - will have to get over there and check soon.
Made my way back almost to the BA without any trouble, then spent a few minutes searching for my cache. Got jabbed in the knee by an agave, and for the next few minutes every step was an adventure in pain.
45 minutes from saddle to 2 mile corner.
11 minutes to 1.5 mile.
39 minutes to the top. Just below the first tunnel, I was hit on the arm by a baseball-sized rock that was dislodged by a chipmunk - ouch! I had just passed a couple girls and they saw it happen - they were like "omg, are you ok?!" I was very glad it didn't hit me in the head or it would have ruined my day. How ironic would that have been - successfully climbing the 'Ship solo, only to be taken out by a rock-throwing chipmunk five minutes from the top? Lol. Left a pretty good mark - along with the agave wound and the usual scratches and scrapes.
Great day, and it made me feel like a badass! :) A line from my current favorite song, "Thriftshop" kept going through my head ... "this is tarzan swinging' awesome!". :y:
