| no partners | | Hiked in to Granite Rapids camp for a 7 day volunteer project. I am working on the write up for my blog with insane levels of detail, but here's the short of it:
This is a pilot project focused on restoring not only habitat but also creating better recreational space on Granite Beach for boaters, backpackers and critters. The beginning stages were removal of 90% of the tamarisk on the site, leaving some of the larger trees near the boaters camp for shade. Then they are planting poles and nursery grown stock of other native riparian species to see what will take in this environment. The results will help to inform more projects on more beach spaces in the future.
Essentially, I went down there and tammie whacked for 6 days then hiked back out. I was so exhausted by the end of the trip, I could barely make a fist! Not to mention that it snowed while we were at the camp during that massive snowstorm that hit Northern Arizona that week. It was cold, wet and miserable - but it was the Grand Canyon, so no one noticed
The trip was river supported, so boats brought in a kitchen and awesome food and gear. We had a great time, and I can't wait to go back and do it all over again! |
