Departed South Kaibab TH at about noon, with temps around 30 degrees.
The Chimney was about 70% covered in packed snow - wouldn't want to have tried it without some type of traction devices and poles, though I saw a few people doing just that. Didn't look safe or fun. Removed the Microspikes above OAP, and didn't need them again until I came back up.
Reached Cedar Ridge in 35 minutes and took a ten minute break.
Between CR and Skeleton Point, there was just a bit of scattered snow around, and only a few very short stretches of it on the trail. It was a glorious, clear, sunny day and I took a million photos as if it were my first time on the trail.
Reached Skeleton Point in 35 more minutes. Took a 13 minute break at SP, temps about 40 degrees ... felt fantastic to be in the sun with no wind and temps above freezing.
I felt like exploring a bit today, so I decided to finally check out what's on the other side of the large rock formation that is five minutes up the trail from the Point. The trail runs along the east side of the formation, so I detoured around the west side ... quickly came to a mule area, then followed a faint path towards a ridge that sticks out above and west of SP. Worked my way out to the end of the ridge and found several large cairns. After exploring the ridge, I decided to try to continue contouring around the formation to the south to connect with the Kaibab, instead of backtracking to the north to return to the spot where I left the trail. There wasn't really a path, but the routefinding was easy ... through some boulders, and some side-hilling across soft, loose dirt and rocks - got a bit sketchy just before I reached the SK again. This detour was great fun! Exploring took about 50 minutes.
Next I got to Cedar Ridge and went out to the end of the ridge, and one of my favorite spots to chill ... 20 minute break there to soak up some sun and lots of good energy.
Took me 53 minutes from CR to the top - didn't put the crampons on until 5 minutes below the Chinmey.
Only saw a couple of mule trains and about a dozen people on the trail. Really enjoyable and invigorating hike ... just exactly what I needed today - reminded me why I am here and happier than I've ever been. :D
