Great first hike with Ranger Kristi! She has been here a few years, but never climbed the 'Ship so it was a no-brainer for our first adventure.
We departed the TH at 9:15 with temps in the 30's. Enjoyed smooth sailing with almost nobody else on the trail. Kristi pointed out a pictograph panel along the trail that I had never seen before. Got to 2 mile switchback and departed the BA for the lower route to the saddle ... didn't stay on the exact same route from last time the entire way, but had no trouble at all making our way out there.
It was nice to see the cottonwood trees at Indian Garden changing colors - would be a nice time to get down there...
We paused at the saddle just a moment to admire the views, then proceeded along the lower route from the saddle to the base of the climbing. We climbed, chimneyed, squeezed and shimmied our way up and soon were rewarded with the summit.
The broken plastic box which contained the summit register has been replaced with a standard-issue ammo can now - thanks to Jamie Compos!
We had fun exploring the summit, and found the large group of etchings on the South end of the summit plateau. Then the best thing happened - Kristi spotted a Bald Eagle! Then we saw two more and watched them soar around for quite awhile ... my first Canyon Balds - so awesome to see! She took pics with zoom lens - if they turned out decent, I will add them later.
The trip out was uneventful ... just very pleasant, with such fine company. :)
Got to hear her use the stern Ranger scolding voice on a guy who had wandered a bit off trail - even though she wasn't in uniform, he listened. LOL
Got to the top and ran into Ranger Della - who everyone knows, rocks - and chatted a bit with her and she took pics for us.
Really, really fun! Probably going out to check out the "three sisters" off Hermit Trail today ...
