| no partners | | We had seen an arch off Dutchman's trail while hiking to Fifty seven arms ( the huge cactus off Dutchman's trail). We couldn't find a name for the arch, so called it Jim's Arch until another is found. We began at Peralta TH at 8:30 and walked passed the last creek crossing before the junction of Bluff Springs trail and Dutchman's trail. There is a small campsite about 100 feet before the junction. Walk to the north end of the camping area and find cairns leading up the mountainside. Follow the cairns until the trail turns west and reaches a saddle. Now, we turned right and crossed the next couple of ridges before finding the arch. We approached the arch from the northeast side. It was an all fours climb, but we were able to find foot and hand holds to get up the boulders and next to the arch. We climbed down to the southwest, which would be impossible to climb up, but we were able to spread our legs against rock sidewalls to let up slip down the large drop offs. We then returned to our approach route and back to the trailhead.
We then joined our Venture Out hiking club who hiked to Fifty Seven Arms while we went off trail. One of the hikers was having difficulty and was completely exhausted. The group of 25 went on to their vehicles in the parking lot while the remaining 5 (including me) tried to hydrate and refresh her with a wet scarf around her neck. After 30 minutes, she still did not feel capable of walking. A party on horseback came down the trail and offered to take the hiker down on horseback. We were about 3 miles from Peralta TH at that point. We were very grateful the woman leading the group had made such a gracious gesture and certainly appreciate her generosity. I don't know if we could have gotten her to Peralta before darkness as she was unable to go on and didn't seem to be recouping her strength. |
