| no partners | | | Took four of my kids up Flat Iron and Peak 5024 for the first time. We took our time, and they did great! It was a beautiful day. The trail was quite busy (as I expected) because it was a holiday. However, I was quite surprised at how many hikers were pushing on to the Flat Iron from the waterfall/"bowl" area. Usually, traffic dies down a bit above that level. Not today. We did have one scary moment as a I had my first direct experience with a rock slide. It was about half way between the bowl and the top. At first I thought it was just a typical hiker displacing a few rocks as he/she was bouldering up. But when the slide continued and I started seeing basketball-sized rocks bounding down the side of the canyon towards the trail, I got pretty spooked. Thankfully, the mini-avalanche settled across the trail 50 feet or so in front of us and no one was hurt, but it definitely got the blood pumping (as if you need any anything more than 3000 ft of elevation gain in under 3 miles to do that . . . .). |
