Just a real nice area with lots of secluded spots. At around 2600 feet elevation, this valley lies in a pleasant transition area between the low and high desert. In 2011 I hiked the Pictograph Trail, but this time I wanted to do the other ones: Morteros and Ghost Mountain (Marshal South home site).
Mortero is Spanish for mortar. The local Kumeyaay (Koo-mee-eye) word for them is `Ehmuu, meaning "bedrock hole." It is about a one mile round trip with minimal elevation change, so it makes for a pleasant stroll. An informative brochure is provided to explain various numbered spots along the way. At the end is a very cool Kumeyaay pictograph. |
