I visited Fort Davis last year, but since Paul is into frontier history, this was an absolute must stop. I didn't get to see the base hospital last year, so was able to complete my tour of the once massive post this time around. 
I wanted to stay at the Indian Lodge at adjacent Davis Mountains State Park, so we got a room there the first night. After touring Fort Davis we went to Alpine to stock up on supplies, before heading down to Big Bend.
