I remembered driving this loop in 1986 and enjoying it. Same this time. Went to Castolon via Ross Maxwell Road, returning by way of the well graded Old Maverick Road. Pretty warm down in the lower elevations; probably in the low 90s, with enough humidity for thunderstorms to fire up to the north toward the Davis Mountains and over the Chisos Mountains. This of course made me ! We stopped in the NPS run store and visitor center at Castolon, which occupies a barracks building that dates back to the 1910-1920 period when there was an Army encampment there (good collection of historical photos). When we reached the Rio Grande we expected a stronger flow. The desert was alive with spring blooms, especially on the Old Maverick section of our drive. The entire area is a wonderland of interesting volcanic geology. The huge cliffs along the river are very impressive. By the time we got back to our camp spot in Chisos Basin, the thunderstorms we had seen there earlier were gone, leaving us with a pleasant evening.
