| partners | | Still no official name of this mountain that I can find, so I'm still going to call it Cline Mountain. We looped around this mountain 2 weeks prior, but we heard there were substantial ruins at the top (you can kind of see them on Google satellite), so we set off again to get to the summit to check it out.
Trailhead is at the end of the residential st at 12th street off Circle Mountain Rd, which fits only 2 or 3 cars. It's a pretty level jeep trail up to the base of the mountain, but we took the western side trail to get to the mountain, and realized in hindsight it's much easier to take the trail that comes up from the southeast. Not a lot shorter, but when you're just talking a somewhat boring jeep trail, it's a little better.
There is no trail to the summit that we found, so it's scrambling through brush and heavy jumping cholla pretty much to the top. The mountain is somewhat crescent shaped, so we opted for the inside (east side) of the crescent which is the least steep. From the inside we hiked to the top of the 1st peak, where if you squint, you can make out the ruins at the very top of the tallest peak. From there, it's a short descent onto a little saddle, then up to the top of the ridge, and from there, you hike along the ridge west to the ruins at the summit. The ruins are pretty impressive: a very large room, with several smaller rooms connected. I circled all the walls from the outside expecting to see at least a few petroglyphs like the ones on the ruins on the hill to the west, but found not a single one. Back down the way we came and jumped over to the jeep trail slightly to the east, then follow that south, in and out of the Cline Creek wash, back to the trailhead. Pretty much no tree cover on this hike, so I wouldn't want to do this in late spring, unless you start really early, definitely not summer. |
