Obviously the first half is all up, so it got a little grueling after the first few miles, but occasional stops to get the old heart down out of critical and I was fine. Got up to the saddle, had an apple and then back to it. The rest is above tree line, tundra, but a good developed trail through rocks and boulders made it very doable. Took my time, no rush, since the grey clouds were still a ways off. Last little stretch up to the summit and then I was standing 12,000 feet above sea level with breathtaking 360 degree views. North Rim of the Grand Canyon is just visible off to the northwest. Had my sandwich, little sit down, chat with some other hikers up there, then the dark clouds were telling me it was time to go. Shortly after beginning the descent, it started hailing tiny pellets, but it only lasted a few minutes. Sprinkled occasionally on the way down, but nothing too serious. Pretty sore the next day, but well worth it |
