Led an ABC trip floating down the mighty Colorado through Black Canyon. This was a repeat of the trip I did Feb 2009 http://hikearizona.com/triplog=41571 - with the difference being that we went much later to avoid the freezing cold weather I encountered the first time.

Turns out that freezing weather was a trade off for a stupidly busy canyon which you get during spring break. Blek. We'd planned to camp at AZ Hotsprings beach again, and we stuck to the plan through it all. In the future, though, I think it is worth it to camp elsewhere and leave the springs for a day trip. The beach there is not soft and sandy, it's often crowded (and populated by strange types) and just not the 'wilderness' experience we're used to as backpackers. There were a number of beaches just downstream that seemed to be MUCH better camping, and it seemed pretty reasonable to reach the hotsprings by paddling back upstream if you wanted to.

We had a beautiful trip - I'll tell the story in the photos rather than dragging on and on here. The highlight (which I failed to capture on film) was Sunday's St. Pattie's Day flotilla of 7 canoes, drifting in the shade of the canyon walls, passing around Jameson's and Bailey's and playing Flogging Molly on my IPod speakers. So, not really wilderness, but certainly good clean fun in the outdoors!

Note to those who may want to do this trip for themselves: we used Desert Adventures for our outfitter (kayaklasvegas.com), and while I found their customer service prior to the trip (over the phone and such) to be superb, on the ground was a completely different matter. Though I certainly understand the challenges presented by their contracts with Homeland Security and the volume of people they were serving that weekend - that really shouldn't become a significant problem for me or my group. I would think that doing this week in and week out would havbe made them smooth and skilled operators, but instead we were left waiting often, or gear was not consistent (some boats had seats, some didn't, which can lead to problems) and our helpers seemed grumpy, stressed and harried. Not really what you want on your vacation!
