| no partners | | Hiked north to south (IMHO the best way to do these passages) This was a pretty epic adventure... Lead an ABC group of 10 into the wilderness, and all 10 got out safely, eventually.
I wrote the whole adventure up in my blog (http://innerstitch.blogspot.com/2013/02/high-adventure-on-arizona-trail.html). It's a long story, so here's the short of it:
Great hike, great weather. Water in the springs and snow in the shade of the high spots. 3 hikers bailed after first night from the junction of 16&17 due to a very ill hiker. Remaining 7 made it to the Gila River the next day, but 1 was beginning to show signs of dehydration (though we suspected it was something more serious at the time).
Third day, the dehydrated hiker had more serious problems and by about 4pm we decided to call SAR. They helicoptered him out at about 5:30pm, but we were within 2 miles of the trailhead. I hiked the remainder in the dark, alone, having a great time. Our evacuee was given fluids and released without further treatment.
Lesson I learned from this hike: no matter how experienced or how fit someone is, I still need to be a water Nazi. |
