| no partners | | Hazy but still nice evening in North Mountain Park. Wanted to find precise start of "NW passage" to No Mtn summit. Took the #100 from the VC past the Trupiano Bench and over the divide. At 1.03 mi out the #100 combines with the #306 for .06 of a mile before splitting again. Exactly halfway on this short combo trail, the little-used NW passage takes off to the left at 1.06 mi out. Returned to the VC to complete the loop via the #306 and north dam, shooting photos of desert transition into summer: Dried up cactus blooms, creosote seedballs, dead fiddleneck, etc. But the park is not without color. A sprinkling of bright yellow palo verde blooms is beginning in the park. Saw a few mourning doves, heard Gambel's quail in the brush and, at 7:18, shortly after sunset, coyotes began yipping and barking, from where I couldn't be certain. The sounds came from North Mountain area but figured that was an echo from the more likely Shaw Butte region. One of the best evenings of the year and cool in the ravines as night fell. |
