| no partners | | Mostly a night hike from the VC through North Mountain Park's inner basin, solo, with virtually no help from a First Quarter Moon. Used my trusty flashlight the last half of the loop, wanting to avoid stumble-rocks and rattlesnakes. The guiding "South Star" popped on at 7:30, about 15 minutes after sunset. That's the light on the gate atop North Mountain. Voices I'd heard earlier had long vanished by then. Figured I had the park to myself, well, not counting birds, coyotes et al. Wasn't a pleasant hike: 107 F when I left TH and 102 on arrival back there at 10 mins after 8. No soothing breeze tonight. Heard lots of quail in the bush but actually saw only three, traveling together and hurrying across the path in front of me. And not a peep from coytoes. The last time I was in the park earlier this month, an ambulance passed on 7th Street with sirens going full-bore, setting off excited howls from back of the VC, near the pond. The only reason to do this hike on a warm night like this was to get some steps in. And that I did. |
