Have now done all three approaches, up and back, in five days: West on the 15th, North on the 17th and now the South. There was probably an East approach as well. You can see traveling along the #306 in the inner basin where a blocked-off trail leads toward the summit from the southeast.
Left the Visitors Center about 3:30 pm, passing along the inner basin, then steeply up past the Cloud Nine ruins and up the even steeper pavement road on Shaw's western slope. I hate that one, 440 steps of lung-hell, then on up by the towers to the summit. A little warm, in the upper 80s, but still beautiful, and it is a pretty trail for a while as you start up the south slope, until you hit a jeep road. Everytime I do the South approach I remember an Asian woman months ago, high above me, with a parasol flashing in the sunlight, a heart-warming beacon that said all was right in the world. Maybe I caught it wrong, but it seemed more hikers were coming from the south than the traditionally busy north. Oh, well. |
