Wallow Fire Tour: I forgot to set my trip meter. From Eagar I drove down 191 past Alpine, and turned west on FR 26 (Beaver Creek Road) which is very bumpy. I took it to FR 24, and turned south, but it's gated off before you get to Bear Creek Trailhead. So, I turned around and did this hike: http://hikearizona.com/photoset.php?ID=24740
Then I drove north on 24 and stopped at Buffalo Crossing. Then up the East Fork of the Black River road, which is FR 276, stopping at all the camping areas to check them out, and at a burned-out area which has been logged. I turned off on 403, but was stopped by a fallen tree. I continued up 276, then turned west on Williams Valley Road (FR 249) all the way to Big Lake, stopping to admire Sierra Blanca Lake.

All the way along this ride I marveled at what did burn as well as what didn't burn. At Three Forks I stopped to check out the burn. It's hard to describe, since there are large areas burned, and large areas not burned. I have to say, the views are better now! There is evidence in some areas of unstable ground along road cuts, where it's clear they had to use heavy equipment to reopen the road. At one point I drove around a rock the size of a 55 gallon barrel that appeared to have JUST FALLEN into the roadway! :o And anywhere there were burned trees within about 200 feet of the road, they have all been logged out. The logging operation is set up in Eagar about 6 blocks from my house, and the sawmill yard is full of blackened logs. The log trucks rumble through town all day long.

I had a wonderful day, although not much hiking, but full of awe and wonder. I saw only one other person/vehicle until I got to Big Lake. I actually talked to him at Buffalo Crossing. There were NO other cars on the dirt roads! I had the place almost all to myself. At Big Lake there were 3 vehicles and a few fisherfolk. 261 was gated shut, and I was so close to home by then, having driven over 100 miles, I drove around the gate to get home. (Revision: Gate is open now.)
