There's a rather large deer herd in the area. It is near Becker Lake but it is not AT Becker Lake, it's closer to town. It's impossible to miss the trailhead when driving into Springerville on US 60.
I go there from time to time. This time it was to return a book I had borrowed. My friends said they were walking there. The book was Wild, by Cheryl Strayed, and I highly recommend it. She backpacked part of the PCT had a pivotal life-changing experience as a result. Very good writer, very vivid descriptions. I just flat couldn't put it down!
Meanwhile, back at the wildlife area trail. I saw some cows and a horse, and some friendly little boys on bikes and a dead gopher snake. A few ravens, but no deer or herons or ducks. I see those when I walk there during the early morning or at dusk. I should post this up as a regular hike, since it is popular, even though it's short.
The photos are from a couple of years ago. But not much has changed. It's a LOT greener there July through September, however! |
