| no partners | | This was a nice mountain bike loop on forest service roads, nothing technical. The group I ride with is mostly an older bunch. They usually go for the distance instead of the techy singletrack. Later in the season the rides get longer.
This area is near Vernon and McNary. Vegetation is mostly ponderosa pine, aspen and Gambel's oak. The irises are at their peak of bloom right now, with fields of blue being seen from time to time. This was the warmest day of the year so far, and breaks were taken in the shade since the temperature was likely in the high 80's.
We saw only one moving vehicle while riding, and one vehicle parked for camping. Car camping in this area would be extremely pleasant, although you will have to bring water. Specifically, the route we took was this one: Parking at the intersection of FR 224 (the Vernon-McNary road) and FR6, we rode south on FR224 to FR267, right on 267, left on 271, left on 271B, left on 224, right on FR96, left on FR6, back to parking. I did record a route on my brand-new GPS and put it in Basecamp on my computer. Now what? 
Of interest to some cyclists is that this year's Tour of the White Mountains mountain bike race will include a dirt road option for the first time in years. It will still have the singletrack events as well. It's the first weekend in October. Just google Tour of the White Mountains. The event raises money for Summit Hospital in Show Low, specifically for cancer patients, I believe. |
