This hike has been on my list for two or three years, so when JJ asked if I wanted to go I had to say yes even though my hip has been ailing for a couple weeks. Time to give it a real test. John's knee has been bothering him as well so neither of us knew just how far we could make it on this hike.

I started down the trail at a medium pace to try and keep the pounding on my hip to a minimum. After a few minutes, JJ was limping and falling behind. He wasn't sure how far he could make it. Within ten minutes he told me to go ahead and leave him. Soon I could no longer see or hear him.

I cached water bottles in three places along the way down. It was already getting warm by 9 AM. After a bit I picked up the pace so I could take a shot at reaching the river and not make John wait too long for me to get back. I seriously didn't think he would hike down more than a couple miles before calling it quits.

I reached the river in three hours. I thought about swimming but when I waded out in the river it was way cold so I just got the extremeties wet. Felt great. I checked out the campsites, took pictures, and had a snack. Didn't see anybody by the river. As I was leaving to start back out of the Canyon I heard a couple voices. Then JJ walked around a corner. Surprise! I didn't expect to see him, but I guess I shouldn't have been very surprised knowing his history.

It was getting hot as we started back up the trail. Some of the steep parts kicked my arse, but we made decent time. My hip hung in there pretty well until the last half mile or so, which I was very pleased about. John's knee was giving him a lot of trouble on the steep stuff, but he still got up and out ahead of me.

The Tanner trail is in very good condition for being unmaintained like the corridor trails. It is challenging in stretches. The scenery is outstanding, and once you finally see the river there is nothing that will stop you until the Colorado is at your feet.

After the hike we cruised over to the Watchtower, then on to Flag for Del Taco and a slurpee before heading home.

Thanks John for the invite, driving, and all your generosity. Sorry about the crowbar to the knee. I swear it was an accident. :D
