I didn't tell them this was the second time I'd actively searched for said sinkhole....I also didn't tell them I was going off the words of an old man who said "Well, its around there somewhere anyway, you'll find it"
With his haphazardly drawn "map" in my pocket and the faint descriptive words given by Tomasi and Butchart ringing in my ears we set off from Duck on the Rock and in a short amount of time I had my sinkhole!!
The "old road" made an appearance as well, you can see it on google maps but its much cooler in person. Lots of "old stuff", we all know how I love old things!
Found some skeletal remains to show the girls and they loved the sinkhole and how excited I was over finding it. 50 yards to the east there is an obvious trail leading north over and below the rim (it makes sense I promise) which leads you to a large overhang full of pictographs!
Cross all the way west under the overhang and you see where the cave mouth of the sinkhole peaks out of the cliff, it's HUGE 25-30 feet across another 20 high!
But you can only see it's sheer size if you climb down into the sinkhole...*ahem* don't do that...that's just silly!
We trekked south through the forest and found tons more interesting olds relics of the past, the 3 Filipinos had a blast and keep asking "When's our next adventure Hippy?" yeah...life is hard here at the Canyon. |
