| partners | | Decided to combine a road trip with some day hikes over the holiday weekend. We drove up US 191 between Clifton and Hannagan Meadow to the Blue Peak area. It’s a great road with awesome views but has a lot of crazy hairpin turns for a paved road. Once up on the rim at about 9200 we reached the dirt road turn off for Blue Peak.
It’s a short hike with excellent views on the McKittrick Trail but the area has experienced significant fire damage so lots of downfall to negotiate. The lookout tower is abandoned and still standing but I was a little nervous hoping the wooden planks would hold my weight.
After checking out the tower we headed down the backside of Blue Peak to try and make Indian Peak only to find the trail pretty much gone from all the fire damage. We explored some off trail but eventually headed back to the trail and Blue Peak TH. Then we finished the day with a great car camp spot in the unburned part of the forest |
