I hiked off trail along an old, nearly vanished side road from Allen Springs Road to the creek bed, where a spring box full of water was accompanied by very healthy native columbines. From my rocky perch above a shallow ravine, I heard an animal approach. Expecting to see a deer, I turned my head to instead find a very large black bear on the opposite side of the ravine a couple of hundred feet away. Instinctively, I grabbed my camera to snap a few pics. I moved a few feet closer. The bear then turned and quickly galloped off into a locust thicket. On the hike back in fading light, I followed an obvious bear path past a few cave entrances in a bluff above. Arriving back at Allen Springs Road, a loud crash from a falling tree shattered the silence of the creek bottom. I hope you found your dinner in there, Big Bear. |
