| partners | | Day two of our Mingus Mountain car camp weekend: John, Jason and I started our day on the upper Black Canyon Trail near our campsite on Allen Springs Road but turned around due to the heat. We mocked an aggressive bull along the way.
That afternoon we drove up to the hang glider ramp and did a clockwise hike on the Viewpoint-North Mingus Loop (had to show them one of my favorites). It was rather hot on the unshaded sections of the Viewpoint Trail. Once on top of Mingus again, the breeze returned. We hung out at the hang glider ramp for a bit, cooling off, and then headed into Jerome for dinner on the outdoor deck at Haunted Hamburger.
We started back to our campsite on the north end of the Allen Springs Road in lower Jerome after a Cottonwood supply run but turned around after being spotlighted from a house in Jerome, having bypassed a "road closed due to extreme fire danger" sign (which was likely bs-it's a Forest Service road).
Back at camp we grabbed chairs and drove east from the campsite up to a nice mountainside overlook of Cottonwood and the southern Black Hills, where we enjoyed a great lightning show moving toward us over the entire Verde Valley. Best lightning show I've seen in years. We put away the chairs and cameras when the lightning came close and then enjoyed the storm from the safety of Jason's 4Runner.
Later, around one a.m. the same bull from earlier in the day came into camp with a deep and aggressive bellowing, which woke John and Jason. I was still outside, so I chased the surly beast into the woods in my underwear, throwing rocks and roaring at it. I'm glad nobody was camped nearby to witness that. The rest of the night was uneventful. Fun trip! |
