| partners | | After meeting in Flagstaff, Nick and I made the short drive up to Lockett Meadow to begin a hike we had been talking about doing for years...
I found the Inner Basin to be overwhelmingly beautiful, from the ring of rocky, avalanche scarred peaks above, to the groves of giant aspens below. "Are we in Colorado?"
We steadily ascended through numerous remnant drifts of fast melting snow, and into the wonder zone of Arizona alpine Shangri-La. We fell in with the crowds upon our arrival at the Humphrey Summit Trail, and endured the usual high altitude hypoxia beat-down along the summit ridge. Relaxing comfortably in t-shirts and shorts at the windy summit, I realized it had to be HOT in the low country. The descent was even more enjoyable, with the softer light of late afternoon bringing out brilliant color in the landscape, and cool breezes picking up. We reached the trailhead a bit after 5, raided my ice-chest, then retreated to Flagstaff for great pizza at Nimarco's on Beaver Street.
It was great to finally check this one off the list. It was a mighty good one! Lots of fun as always, Nick! |
