The route is easy to follow with only slight overgrowth of some kind on thorny weeds - legs got a few scratches. The 3 hours total that it took involved quite a bit of stopping for photos and some lounging around on the top, as well as the requisite climbing of the fire tower. Total "moving" time according to my GPS was 2:15.
FR 487 is open all the way to the top of Aztec Peak. While it is arguably passable by passenger car, there are a few rough spots mainly near Workman Creek Falls where I would personally be very reluctant to drive a passenger car. FR 288 is paved to FR 487 except for a few sections of gravel.
This is a really great hike; not overly strenuous, outstanding views and a great break from the desert heat. The drive up is nice, too. |
