It was the first full day of a 7 night car camping trip to the Aztec Peak area of the Sierra Ancha with Grasshopper. We had arrived in the afternoon of the day before and set up camp in a grove of ponderosa pines and oak trees. It was the usual large Camp Grasshopper for Hank and he was worn out from all the work it takes to get it set up. So he decided to take a day of rest in camp while I did some wandering around nearby. My first destination was to check out a nearby spring shown on my gps map at the head of Workman Creek. The spring was a short walk down a grassy drainage with a few pesky new mexico locust trees scattered about just to make it interesting. There was a trickle of water coming from the spring but don't know if it is perennial. From there I saw a grove of Aspen Trees and went to check that out. As usual in my wanders, as soon as I reached one point of interest something else in the distance caught my eye and soon I was headed up towards Aztec Peak on the Abbey's Way Trail #151. My connection with the Abbey's Way trail was past the location of the Peterson Ranch but Hank and I would come back to take a look at it a few days later. My ultimate destination on this wander ended up being a cliff on a ridge to the north west of Aztec Peak. There was a wide ledge about midway up the cliff that looked like a good place for a cliff dwelling.

The ledge turned out to be a dud as far as ruins go but the views were nice. I decided to take the road from Aztec Peak back to camp after a detour to the ridge top north of Aztec Peak. On the ridge top I was treated to a cliff top view down on Murphy's Ranch and got some nice photos of parts of the ranch which are difficult to see from the road. On the way back to camp I took a detour up the Murphy Ranch road to see if a fallen tree blocking the road might have been removed. I was pleased to see someone had removed the tree during the day. That would take 2 miles off a couple of hikes we had planned from the Murphy TH over the next few days. It was starting to get cold and windy by the time I reached camp requiring the addition of a couple extra layers of clothing while fixing dinner. There would be some white stuff on the ground the next morning, more like sleet than snow.
