I'll take the Sierra Ancha Plate with a side of Crispy Hills and Burnt Pines please. Holy Moly I wasn't expecting to see that much area burned by the 2016 Juniper fire. A month or two ago I came here to hike this and the trailhead was closed. Nothing was still burning so it was hard to understand how much had actually burned. Today I got to see for myself. While it could have been worse it was painful to see this beautiful area cleared by fire.

I took this hike from the book "Eagles Greatest Hikes" several years ago and it has since become one of my all time favorites. After seeing what I saw today I am afraid it just dropped about 100 notches on the favorite list.

Parker Creek Trail remains in great shape with the surrounding area all cooked.

Abbey's Way Trail is fine to the meadow. That's where the real headache begins. From the meadow to the Lookout Tower on Aztec be prepared to fight your way through what was once a trail. Now just overgrown and covered with downed charcoal trees. It was such a struggle to get through I nearly turned around and aborted the hike. I pushed through and eventually made it to the lookout tower.

Moody Point Trail is in pretty good shape overall.

Rim Trail was also toast however it wasn't difficult to navigate. There are tons of cairns along the way and the forest isn't very dense here.

All in all this trip took me an extra hour to complete compared to my previous visits. There were a few highlights: On the drive in I saw 6 sheep down in the Salt River. They were taking a drink and then scaled the rocks on the side as if it were nothing. Then on the Parker Creek Trail as I was going up just passed the main saddle I saw a bear right on the trail. He was too quick to catch a picture of but it made my day. Unfortunately the burned landscape put a damper on things.

If you are thinking of making this loop I would wait a few months for the Abbey Trail to get cleared. Otherwise it is still a nice hike.
