We didn't get our second hike in up for the arizonahikers.com GHOTM (group hike of the month) at the White Mountains due to weather so Linda and I decided we would do this on our way home just to get a few extra miles in for the 575 miles we would end up driving.

I remarked as we were driving east from the Springerville area about all the traffic at an intersection off of the 260 before I found myself driving down the Rim hill and then realized, THAT is where I was supposed to turn  . So at the Colcord Ridge intersection I pulled in and we said our good-byes to Ambika and Guru as we had been caravaning with them. We drove back UP the hill and made our way into Woods Canyon Lake area looking at the building clouds and hoping the rain would hold off. After doing the normal two circles around the most unorganized parking lot, we were lucky to find a place.

We quickly ate our lunch, geared up and headed west as we would be doing the loop clockwise. It had started to lightly rain and would do so off and on except for about 15 minutes or so as we made our way around the outlet and the first finger. The detour is still in place (to keep you far away from the eagle's nest). As always, I admire the landscape as we make our journey around this west side of the lake. I did stumble :o due to the wet ground and yes, you get to experience it live with me in the video. I took a lick and kept on ticking, not missing a beat, ha!

The weather kept getting darker and darker as we headed east now. Along the way, I saw the two fingers I had missed when hiking with my niece back on June 8th. I knew they were there but the trail takes you further away from them where before, you walked at the edge. Hiking this direction you get a better view of them.

We continued through the forest on the nice wide trail when all of a sudden I noticed something coming down from the sky :-k low into the trees... was it clouds, fog or rain? Well whatever it was, we donned our rain jackets just in case. I filmed this phenomon and I think you can see what it was like; I think it was the clouds. My skin started crying as we walked through this.

Finally we reach the dam and the rain is really coming down now. I was just glad there wasn't any ligtning so I could keep my chrome dome up. You could barely make out the camp store area from the low clouds and rain. We walked across the spillway, it was really raining pretty hard. We tried to make decent time on the sopping and slippery ground. We were sure glad to get back to the car. Little did we know that the drive getting off the rim would be with extremely limited visibility; it was really spooky. Here is a 1:16 slideshow video: http://youtu.be/14Cc1KNu4-s

Needless to say the weather made this hike most interesting and I was glad I brot my more expensive rain poncho. What a fun way to end the weekend.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
