I had planned this hike a month earlier for April, but then realized this would be much better in May when the temps in Phoenix start to approach 100. Turns out it was definitely the way to go. We went with our friends Rafael and Tamara and their son Ardee, and also Rafael's friend Bruce. I can't imagine more perfect weather than what we had today for this hike. On our way to ehe TH, along 260 on my car stereo, Rust Never Sleeps by Neil Young just happened to rotate in my CD player, which always seems to happen when I drive that section of highway. Somehow that always seems the perfect music for that area.

From the Rocky Point picnic area, the trail has been rerouted around where bald eagles have nested in a tree so they can raise their chicks in peace. Once we got to the other side of the lake, we ran into a Game and Fish Commission biologist who had 2 telescopes set up (on set at the height for adults, one for kids) to look at the nest. The views were really great. The biologists said the chicks are now 5-6 weeks old, and they were visible thru the telescopes. I also brought binoculars which the kids and others in our group were using.

The rest of the hike was uneventful, but very pleasant to hike thru the pines with the breezes while looking at the lake. Everyone really enjoyed the hike, which I was glad about.

Our route took a more direct route than official HAZ track, which seems to meander more by the FR105 entrance. This resulted in a little extra climbing, but the kids really enjoy that.
