Parked at the oval at the end of McKellips, west of 68th Street, and walked south into the park on the west side of the lagoon. Found many dirt trails, some low, some leading up to butte tops. The paved path along the Crosscut runs past the reservoir and dam and up to another parking lot, this one off Curry. On the SRP map of the canal system, this reservoir is called the "Pond."
Sites of interest. The Martinez Water Treatment plant, one of two suppliers of Tempe drinking water, on the east side of the park. And the two parallel flumes delivering water to it from the diversion dam at the Crosscut. Most of the SRP canals are embedded in the ground, but just below the diversion dam, the Crosscut's water travels over a rare above-ground aqueduct.
Not a quiet place, despite the light use. Landing pattern for Sky Harbor's north runway goes above the park. Great place if you're into photographing large planes. And there are nice looks over at Papago Buttes, including Governor Hunt's pyramid tomb. |
