Began from the entrance to Moeur Park lot, south of Curry on Lake. Crossed busy Curry on the trot and entered Evelyn Hallman Park on a dirt trail bearing north. In a half-mile, I reached the dam and walked uphill to the reservoir where I was distracted by a snowy egret. Shot several photos of it. Wished I'd brought my tripod so I could zoom without camera-shake.
From there, I walked south on the paved Crosscut Canal path and was soon surprised by finding a dense riparian area on the east side of the stream, most of it on a small island. There was a nice picnic square, and I could see a path coming down from the SRP building. Suppose this place is a popular lunch spot for employees.
The stream soon dropped down over a dam, about six feet high I estimated, and just beyond another rest area the stream vanished under an old stone bridge on Mill Avenue, at the edge of Moeur Park. The stream, though almost stagnant here, likely continues unseen beneath a large, modern building on the other side. Its destination, at the Grand Canal, can't be more than 100 yards to the southwest. I left that last little bit for another day.
I walked across Curry at Mill on the green light and then uphill to where my car was parked on the park's south side. I had eaten little all day, and in my haste to hurry home, I left my favorite trekking pole behind. Probably at the curb where I changed back into my sneakers. Didn't realize it until long after I reached the house. I had a sentimental attachment to the pole. I had purchased it in Grindelwald, Switzerland, more than a year ago and hiked with it there in the Alps, under the cliff of the Eiger and elsewhere. The pole accompanied me on just about all my hikes since then. I'll look for it tomorrow, but I carry only a smidgen of hope.
NOTE: Nov 12, 2013. The stream connecting the Crosscut and Grand canals goes underground at a Mill Avenue bridge just north of Curry/Washington. It proceeds southwest under the Papago Gateway Center, between the six-story office building and parking garage and empties into the Grand just W of the Center Parkway/Washington light rail station. The estimated distance between the Mill Avenue Bridge and Grand Canal is 500 feet. |
