What a jewel of a trail! And had it all to myself for the entire afternoon. Judging by other triplogs going back a year, I would say this is not unusual. Started about 2 from the 20th St TH, reached Buena Vista Lookout at 3:30, then returned the same way, arriving back at my car before sunset. Dawdled along, stopping to take in the views and shoot some photos.

Beautiful trail once you get up to the first saddle and drop down into a hidden valley every bit the equal of the one with the capital letters up above. I felt like I was in a world of my own down there with no hint of urban life. This is no doubt a wonderful spot in wildflower March.

The trail itself is in no hurry to get you to the top. It meanders following natural contours, although there are switchbacks in a few places. Kudos to the designer. And relatively smooth, certainly not a lot of loose rock. No outstanding views today because of clouds and smog.

Weather pleasant, about 70 with no wind, though I felt a few rain drops coming down. Hard to figure why more don't hike this trail. Maybe it's the lack of parking off 20th St south of Euclid. Just a small turn-around with room for only about 3-4 cars.

Two other small issues. Bees at Buena Vista and a confusing trail juncture coming down. I missed the little cairn that leads down into the valley from the west and instead walked ahead 100 yards on a nice but unmarked trail to the north before realizing the error. You won't have trouble on the ascent, only coming down. If you're unfamiliar with the trail, you won't want to cross the valley after sunset. Large bouders in the path make it difficult to find the trail in a couple of places.

Anyway, I place Geronimo right up there now with the Pyramid and Alta as my favorites on South Mountain.
