Meandered over to the pond from the little parking circle at W end of McKellips, then, more disciplined, layed the track on the return trip. Just 1.79 more miles, Salt River's mileage calculator says, from Indian School to McDowell. Did the little dam to McDowell yesterday. Although SRP lists the "pond" as the end of the Crosscut, a stream with rapids emanates from below the big dam at the pond on its way to feed the Grand Canal. No mallards today, but saw 8 coots, starkly marked creatures with their dark black heads and white bills. Saw two ring-necked ducks for the first time. All 10 floating in the pond. Light traffic, mostly bicyclers with a few joggers. Probably ambled a total of two miles. Another beautiful late afternoon enhanced by the colorful Papago Buttes near sunset. |
