When I got to the Thumb I still had lots of time so decided to explore around the north side and down the ridge line to the west. The views from the ridge line are spectacular. After following the ridge for about a quarter mile I spotted a trail marker for one of the many rock climber access trails in the area and decided to make it a loop hike. At that point it was actually shorter to go back on the climber trail. I forgot to bring my gps but I've marked up a picture of the climber trails to show my route. There is a fair amount of slipping and sliding going down this very steep route. Once the trail reaches the more level bottom of the drainage it takes you past a rectangular rock wall that I've wondered about for years. I thought it was an old cabin foundation but turns out it is an old water tank about 4-5 feet deep and no longer in use.
This loop hike turned out to be an interesting variation of the out-and-back Tom's Thumb hike and opened up a ridge line access to the west for future exploration. |
