This started out as a hike to Tom's Thumb from the north end and back to get some exercise. However as usual I got in the exploring mood on the way up and continued past Tom's Thumb along the ridge that extends to the north west to Peak 3941. I took a short cut returning to the trail head using a climber's trail.

It was a beautiful day with many hikers on the main trail. Made good time (for me) climbing up the grade to the intersection of the TT trail and the East End trail (46 minutes) but was being passed by everybody else heading up the trail except for one couple. Several people were running up the trail. Made me feel like a real slug, especially after checking JJ's time today to that intersection which included a side trip to the East End Peak.

After going around Tom's Thumb and proceeding along the ridge line it was a solitary journey although I did see a rock climber on top of a gigantic boulder on the return. There's some minor boulder crawling going around TT and at a few spots along the ridge line but mostly easy going on an unmaintained "trail" until reaching what I labeled as Peak 1 in my gps track. From there it requires some scrambling to go over the top of Peak 1 but there is a fairly easy bypass by traversing the hillside on the north side following faint animal (or maybe human) trails. Peak 3941 is an easy climb and has several flat areas at different levels at the top which I took some time to explore. I did not see a peak top cairn or any sign of a peak register so this peak must not be a priority on the peak baggers' lists. There are some great views from this peak but that's standard for any high spot in this area.

I resisted the temptation to take a short cut down the north side of the peak and cutting through some private property on the return. Instead I went back along the ridge to the climber's trail. The return down the climber's trail is very steep and slippery on the granite gravel covered ground so my trekking poles were almost a necessity.
