This is a little hike located at the San Pasqual Battlefield State Park. The park has a nice visitors' center and museum with information about the battle, which occurred in 1846. Kit Carson and Edward Beale were there, and went for help after General Kearny lost men to the Mexican Army.
The trail used to be longer before a wildfire a few years ago. The upper part is now closed, although it's possible to hike it, it's very brushy. I was wearing shorts on this balmy December day and elected to turn around. Besides, there is a big sign that says "Trail Closed."
Views of the beautiful San Pasqual Valley, its farms and its little river, the San Dieguito, and the mountains framing it make this a nice little jaunt on a sunny day.
My great-grandparents lived in this valley, my great-uncles owned the land on this side of it, including where the park is, and where the Wild Animal Park is located. Also my great-uncles donated the original patch of land for the battle monument. There was a big brass plaque on a boulder, commemorating the Battle of San Pasqual, for as long as I can remember. The plaque was stolen about 6 months ago! The park ranger told me that they are planning to make a new one out of plastic! People stole it for the brass, I guess.
My great-grandparents and one of my great-uncles are buried in the nearby pioneers' cemetery. Across the valley, also damaged in the fire, is the one-room schoolhouse where my grandma taught school for a few years. This was about 100 years ago. My grandmother was born in 1870 and my grandfather, Oliver Webb a few years before that. My great-grandfather, Edward Webb was buried in that cemetery in 1898, and my great-grandmother's grave says she died in 1914.
After visiting the park I drove over to look at the schoolhouse. A big chainlink fence has been put around it. I saw recently on "San Diego Save Our Heritage Org." that the school house and a nearby home are determined to be of historic interest and in great need of restoration. The school house was already restored once, in 1944. |
