Seriously, although I lived in Hawaii for 8 years, I had never once tried this. It was free, it was fun, and I got a good workout, especially since I had been kayaking the day before!
The boat we went in is for the learners, and is a double boat, with 6 people on each side. In the stern, on the starboard side, sits the caller, who also steers, in a similar manner to that of a paddle raft guide. On a paddle raft you paddle only on the side you're sitting on, but on this boat you switch sides when it's called. The caller yells "Hut!" and the paddlers yell "Ho!" As you yell "Ho!" you take your last dip on that side, then switch sides. Everything is in unison, just like on a paddle raft. You watch the person in the bow, in the same hull you are in, to keep cadence.
We saw dolphins at a distance, and loads of pelicans. When I was a kid, these sightings were much more rare, but now they are common.
This club allows you to paddle with them for free four times. It's on Saturdays, about 8:15 a.m. at Oceanside Harbor. The club has a large gated compound right there by the main boat ramp where they keep all their canoes. The members train all year and go to races during the season, which is in spring and summer.
I really need to build up some upper body strength. This would do it, but it's 45 minutes to Oceanside from where I'm living, in light traffic, and at least an hour in heavier traffic. |
