What happened was an early morning mistake entering the wrong wash, getting to a saddle, traversing a bighorn sheep ledge, getting to a ridge, confirming we were not where we wanted to be, and ended up going up a smaller peak in the area we knew we could get up without too much hassle and not put us in too much danger allowing us to get back down before dark safely. The mistake was made because of the excitement to get going and thinking we had the right drainage identified, but things like this will happen from time to time, just a lesson learned.
The great thing about this day though was there was no sign of human trace at all in this area. No footprints, no trash, just a few small ordinances that had fallen from the sky in years past. Mike got his first run in with cholla completing a hat trick of cholla barbs in just a matter of 5 minutes and fifty feet of each other. We think that is some kind of a record. We saw the most preserved bighorn sheep skull any of us had ever seen. The bighorn ledge we traversed was pretty awesome, up at the top of the peak we did make it on we were still able to see the Gulf of California and dunes. Being in the middle of this range made me think, this is probably the most rugged range I have been in here in AZ? And the best part of not doing what we set out to do is the excuse to come back down and try again. |
