Lots of police and media at the trailhead and 3 helicopters flying overhead all morning. Met Sam (goes by Sonny) as I was waiting. If you've hiked here in the morning then you've probably seen him. 79 years old, been hiking Camelback 3 times per day everyday except Sunday since 1975. Claims 34,000 ascents! He said he retired from Camelback last year but came by today for one last summit. I think he'll be back though.
New trail is a little bit longer, its less steep than before and probably more user friendly. Meh. I didn't think it was all that bad before but that 4mil is still a better investment into the city than two more "Her name is patience", in my opinion. Extra parking is certainly nice.
Saw the HAZ development team surveying the new trail. GPS, measuring wheels, plumb bobs, laser levels, sphygmomanometers, etc... Look for an updated official route soon! |
