Unlike BobP, I don't like hiking with groups of 15. Or 150. Or 1500. Which is why I try to avoid Arizona's three most popular (populous?) trails.

An old lesson I learned in Colorado years ago was that Sundays in January are the best days for skiing when the Broncos are in the playoffs. This holds true for the Super Bowl even when the Broncos aren't in it. I've tested the theory in Arizona too. It's strange since in both states the game doesn't begin until after the ski areas are closed, and yet, you will have the mountain to yourself all day. It's really a nice treat.

After my 4:30am wakeup decision to skip an eastern supes day with fotg, I went back to bed and didn't get up until after 11. After being productive for a while I decided to take advantage of the day and hit a couple of peaks while nobody was on them. Rare for a perfect 65-degree weekend in mid-winter. :y:

I planned to be on top of Squaw at sunset (5:59), and worked backward from there. I'm no Dave1, so I began from Cholla at 2:39 and made it to the summit at 3:20. A very unimpressive :41 ascent. Took :28 to get down Echo Canyon. I haven't been there since the new trail was built. It was nice!

After a 5-minute break, I headed back up. It was slow going, and I was feeling it, but managed to summit in 44 minutes. Was back to the Cholla trailhead 28 minutes later for a 2:26 double.

Slower than I had hoped to be, I didn't get started at Piestewa until 5:26. With sunset at 5:59, I was resigned to not making it to the summit in time. (Don't Dave and Joe do this in 20 min?). 35 seemed like a stretch after my Camelback double. Somehow though, with views on the way up, I motivated, pushed on, and made it! 5:59 exactly. Not sure when the sun set up there, but the extra elevation gave me a few minutes to spare.

Spent about 20 minutes on the summit ... the only one there :y: ... before heading down under a full moon in 24 minutes. On the way, I got to see the halftime explosions 14 miles to the west. Thankfully I was unable to hear Katy Perry (unlike riding in BobP's car). :A1:

Was back out before the gates closed at 7. Went out for a bite to eat and saw the end of the game which was pretty exciting. I think hiking these two mountains without droves of people was pretty awesome too!
