Having now camped at both of them I will say I prefer Vallecito. The reason being it is not as heavily used (because it lacks the popular draw of hots springs and swimming pool). It therefore is quieter and less hectic. Both are charming in their own way and well run.
I reserved a tent site online before the trip, as this campground (along with the very popular Borrego Palm Canyon Campground at Borrego Springs where I camped the night before) frequently fills up and you might be disappointed if you just popped in late in the day looking for a spot. The sites are close together so there is not much privacy to be had. Still I enjoyed my stay and even joined some of my camping neighbors over by the patio area next to the spa after dark for conversation ( I got invited over because they needed their bottle of wine opened and forgot the opener).
My tent spot was near the drainage that carries water from the springs and seeps through the campground, so I got to enjoy the abundant chorus of frogs and toads during the evening! That was really neat, and as the evening wore on their sounds would diminish, but if suddenly the people started making more noise, they too would crank it back up. Very
This place is an oasis for wildlife. As soon as I arrived in the afternoon and settled into my chair to enjoy a brew before putting up the tent, a dove kind of like charged right to me like it was looking for a handout! Rabbits and quail scampered about. And there were lots of birds to be seen. A certain Outdoor Lover I know would have a blast here.
The temperatures were much to my liking on this trip: mid 80s in the afternoon and low to mid 50s around dawn. In fact, the low at Borrego Springs on the 20th was 56 degrees and it was 52 at Agua Caliente on the 21st. This compares to 41 and 39 degrees back at my house in Tucson for those two mornings. Glad I went to California!
Here are the sounds of the amphibians for your enjoyment:
