I took the main route to the palms in the canyon bottom, returning on the alternate route that stays a little higher on the south side of the drainage. Because of our very dry conditions this winter, wildflowers here and throughout the entire Anza-Borrego were minimal. This is a fairly small palm grove now, because on September 10, 2004 thunderstorms unloaded heavy rain in the upper reaches of the watershed, leading to a flash flood 10 to 20 feet high that uprooted hundreds of trees, sending them down toward the campground area in a raging torrent of watery madness. Nature at its finest! In spite of this, still a worthy destination. A reminder of that event a decade ago is all the palm logs scattered about on the way up canyon. Quite impressive. |
