| partners | | My goals for this trip were to go back and get to Mortero Palms (and perhaps further) and document the drive to there via EC109 and back out to Highway S2 by way of Dos Cabezas. Both endeavors were a success. Some back and forth communication with azbackpackr prior to my return to the area resulted in her driving over the hill from Valley Center to join me for a couple of nights of pleasant camping at Vallecito. It was a mellow 365 mile drive for me from Tucson and a really easy one for her (under 100 miles).
On my way over there Friday I was running ahead of the 2 PM campground check in time, so stopped for a few beers and conversation at the Lazy Lizard in Ocotillo, a place I liked from two weeks back. I rolled into the campground at 1:45 PM and was standing there talking to the campground host when Elizabeth pulled up less than 5 minutes of my arrival! How's that for timing?
This county park, along with the nearby Agua Caliente, are good choices for a basecamp with amenities for exploration of the southern portions of the Anza-Borrego Desert region.
I had been in Elizabeth's presence back in July, 2001, when she gave our SAHC group a tour of Casa Malpais up in Springerville, but it was good to finally actually meet her. I had a good time and it was fun trading notes on people we both know and places and events from days long ago.
Sunday after parting ways, I stopped in for yet another beer at the Lizard, before heading to Yuma where I spent the night at the Yuma Cabana Motel (not bad $60 with tax). Monday it was breakfast at Denny's then home by way of Ajo, Why, and across the Rez on SR86. Always a pretty drive and a nice alternative to the interstates.
Where to next? |
