| no partners | | When some New Mexico meetup folks decided to camp and hike in Chiricahua National Monument, I decided to join them. I went down early Friday afternoon to see if I could get a spot in the popular campground, but alas all but two crummy spots were taken, so I headed over to camp nearby along Pinery Canyon Road. A storm was moving in and I encountered light showers on the drive there.
I don't hike much in the monument, much prefering other places in the range, but was looking forward to it. Unfortunately the weather prevented that from happening. So at least I got one night of soggy camping in. Met some of the New Mexico folks Saturday morning and I guess they hiked a little in the monument, but I decided against a second night, as basically thunderstorms which started in earnest about 2 AM Saturday continued most of the day.
After packing up my gear during a break in the showers, I headed over to West Turkey Creek for a look around before heading home.
The New Mexico folks didn't camp, and as I had told them beforehand, the chance of them finding a spot in the monument campground Saturday was slim, given the fee free weekend plus Easter thrown in. |
