| no partners | | This was sort of a scenic drive, sort of an area I wanted to explore, and sort of a bust. After the long drive in Lincoln County a week before, I thought I would go to southern Otero County and check out parts of Otero Mesa. This is supposed to be a really nice desert grassland. Mostly, it looked a lot like the ratty desert that is all over the basin to the west, but with some late winter over grazed grasses. I saw no pronghorn as hoped, but I did not get to what may be one of the nicer areas of the mesa, the SW area near Hueco Tanks.
I came in from US 54 and took 52 south towards the Cornudas Mountains. Instead of keeping on going south, I ended up heading east towards Dell City, TX. I got my flat close to, or in Dell City, and drove home slowly on my spare.
The most interesting of the mountains, Cornudas itself, appears to be fenced off and on state or private mining land. Wind Mountain, the highest, is still accessible on BLM land. If I go back to the area, I would enter from Texas, and the southwest. This area may be at it's nicest in late monsoon season, not late winter and early spring. |
