| no partners | | Let's just start with this. It's cold. Very, very cold. In the 20s. Plus 20mph wind, gusting to 35mph. Winchill in the teens. I decided to do this anyway.
After saying hi to Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly on the red carpet at the premiere of Noah right outside my hotel, I decided to go for a city hike. My planned loop on the Bridle Path didn't work out as there are no lights on that path, and since there's a flashing light on my back that says "tourist" I thought it would be good to stick with lighted pathways.
That didn't work either. I basically made spagetti with my track, but it was interesting and fun nonetheless. Wandered through Strawberry Fields, but didn't see any Beatles. Rambled into the preserve, but ended up heading back west to check out some Natural History. Jackie O is retaining water, and her icy personality was really rough on my nose. Apparently she likes it counter-clockwise, but I'm a clockwise guy. Some people looked at me weird. Oh well.
I got off track somewhere near the North Meadow, and had to find a dark area to pee. There aren't any restrooms out here, which sort of makes sense. I wanted to hit the great hill and the meer, but apparently turned around about 7 blocks short of my goal.
Hit up the Met on the way back, along with an Egyptian Obelisk. Hopped a fence to check out the Turtle Pond. Didn't see Denny anywhere. Mr. Belvedere was a great visit as always, and of course I had to visit the official NWS station for New York. Lots of equipment behind the fence.
Rambled some more, this time to the Boathouse on the Lake. It was closed, though I've had many expensive drinks here on previous trips. It's a must for a nice summer day.
There was some Shakespeare in the park, and then I took time to stroll in the mall. There's a statue of Columbus in a circle, but it's not even within sight of Columbus Circle.
Nearing the end, I hit up Wollman Rink, where the ice was not melting, and Joey Buttafuoco was on the ice practicing his Tanya Harding moves.
A stroll past the pond (there was ice on it too) and a nice waterfall before I exited on 59th Street and headed back to the hotel to warm up.
Hit up a local pub for a bowl of delicious chili for dinner. |
